Speaker: Dr. Gary A. Landis, CFPIM, CIRM

Gary A. Landis, CFPIM, CIRM, is president of G. A. Landis Associates and has over 25 years experience in various types of management, both as a consultant and a practitioner. His company provides both consulting and education in ERP, MRP, JIT, and a variety of computer systems applications. He served in management positions with Unisys, Clow Corporation, Allis-Chalmers, Joy Manufacturing, and General Motors, and his operating experience includes purchasing, distribution, inventory control, and both general and production management. Dr. Landis holds both BS and MBA degrees from Kent State University and a doctorate from the University of Alabama. He served on the faculty of Auburn University.

In 1981, Gary served as International President of APICS.  He has served on the board of directors, Foundation, and has chaired the International Conference Committees. He is currently an APICS certified instructor, and serves on the editorial review board of the P&IM Journal. He speaks at many APICS-sponsored events.

Description of presentation:  

The intent of this presentation is to impart some methods and techniques for attendees to use in anticipating demand for service parts. Various categories of service parts will be described with pertinent techniques suggested for each classification.

Most companies have a difficult time predicting the demand for these items. In most cases, information is available, but the data is not collected or analyzed. This presentation will identify the pertinent data and describe how to use it to help predict demand.  

Learning objectives:

    The participant will learn to:

  • Describe the various types of service parts.
  • Utilize the techniques for predicting different types of service parts demand.
  • Apply these techniques in their company environment.
  • Use examples provided during the webinar to support their company's requirements.
  • Determine the type of metrics required for measuring improved fill rates.

Topic:  Improving the supply chain efficiencies.

Industry (should focus in P&IM):  oil and gas
Challenges:  high-cost items, offshore manufacturers, long lead times
Description:  large supply division for supporting of process facilities - includes purchasing, planning, logistics, customers, suppliers
Case Study, Illustration, Story, Survey Results, etc. #2:
Topic:  Obsolete material and lack of parts identification
Organization(s):  domestic producer
Industry (should focus in P&IM):  mining and processing
Challenges:  items in stock to support equipment already scrapped, building new plant, and items expensed upon receipt
Description:  purchasing systems, warehousing, accounts payable
Case Study, Illustration, Story, Survey Results, etc. #3:
Topic:  Customer service in an aftermarket 
Organization(s):  global organization, but case involves only domestic operations
Industry (should focus in P&IM):  material handlingChallenges:  not being able to predict aftermarket demand, robbing production to reduce unit downtime in field, creating product shortages in manufacturing
